Intellectual property law, especially the law of patents, can involve highly technical matters. A minority of New Jersey’s attorneys are registered to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office; and even fewer are in private practice. While some of these attorneys hold advanced degrees in the hard sciences in addition to their law degrees having substantial experience in a research setting provides a "feel" for understanding research data and converting it into the technical language of a patent application. Before beginning my practice at Benjamin Appelbaum Attorney at Law, I was involved in laboratory research in microbiology. This background gives our law firm the ability to fine-tune patent applications, identify cases of actionable infringement and anticipate and address other intellectual property issues that may arise.

Technical and scientific experience

Before becoming an attorney, I earned a Ph.D. in microbiology from Penn State in 1976. From there, I went on to work as a researcher, including in the pharmaceutical industry, for more than 15 years. Legal knowledge

I have been an intellectual property attorney for almost 20 years. I was admitted to the bar of New Jersey in 1992 and New York in 1993, and have been registered to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (Registration No. 38068) for nearly as long. I am as experienced working with other attorneys as I am working with other scientists, individual inventors and technical professionals. We can work together not only to protect your intellectual property, but also to negotiate licensing and royalty agreements or address instances of infringement.
