Areas of Practice Workers Rights
Description

Melissa S. Chan is an associate at Cary Kane LLP. She represents individual employees with claims of employment discrimination and failure to pay overtime and proper wages. On behalf of labor unions she arbitrates disputes, negotiates collective bargaining agreements and litigates in New York and federal courts.

Ms. Chan is licensed to practice law in New York and Connecticut. She is also admitted to the U.S. District Courts for the Southern and Eastern Districts of New York. She graduated from Pace Law School, where she served as Senior Editor of the Journal of Court Innovation, a publication founded by the New York State Judicial Institute, the Center for Court Innovation, and Pace Law School. She received her undergraduate degree from Binghamton University, where she studied Japanese language and culture.

Although her legal career is in its early stages, Ms. Chan is no stranger to advocacy. During law school, Ms. Chan served as an honors extern at the Yonkers Branch of the Westchester District Attorney’s Office, where she appeared on behalf of the People of New York at arraignments and calendar calls. She also participated in the Courtroom Advocates Project, where she petitioned the Queens Family Court for an order of protection on behalf of an indigent domestic violence victim. During her college years, she galvanized a successful campaign to have Lunar New Year recognized on the university calendar.

Ms. Chan is a member of the Asian American Bar Association of New York, the Association of the Bar of the City of New York, and the Federal Bar Council.

"The true purpose of an attorney is very often to give an effective voice for the client. The problems faced by workers are important and they deserve the very best possible representation. that’s what i try to do as a workers rights attorney."
