Gary Jackson grew up in Shreveport, Louisiana and came to North Carolina to attend Duke University. Gary obtained his undergraduate degree from Duke (magna cum laude) in 1976. In 1979, he graduated from Duke Law School, where he served on the editorial board of the Duke Law Journal. After clerking for a federal judge in California, he became a litigation associate with the world’s largest law firm, Baker & Mackenzie. In 1986, Gary returned to North Carolina, where he was a partner with Womble Carlyle Sandridge & Rice. In 1995, he left "big firm" practice to begin representing individuals and small business owners, primarily against large corporate entities.
Gary has practiced law for over thirty-three years, the last eighteen of which have been devoted exclusively to representing plaintiffs. He holds leadership positions in several national and state legal organizations, such as the American Association for Justice, the Southern Trial Lawyers Association and the North Carolina Advocates for Justice. In 2011-12, Gary served as President of the North Carolina Advocates for Justice. Gary frequently speaks throughout the country at educational programs for lawyers, and writes articles addressing current legal trends and developments. Recent recognition includes Gary’s selection as one of the top 100 "Super lawyers" in North Carolina and one of the top 25 "Super lawyers" in Charlotte. He has also been selected to Business North Carolina’s "Legal Elite", "Outstanding Lawyers of America" and Litigation Counsel of America. In 2009, he was invited to be a Fellow of the American Bar Foundation, a group limited to the top .3% of the nation’s attorneys.
During his career, Gary has been involved in some of North Carolina’s most significant legal cases, including:
Prosecution of class actions against major North Carolina hospitals for overcharging uninsured patients;Class actions for credit card holders and consumers against banks and other lenders for unlawful and deceptive practices;Shareholder and derivative actions to recover investment losses;Representation of class claimants against manufacturers for property damages caused by defective products;Class actions against national production builders for construction defects; andClass actions against the State of North Carolina on behalf of retirees.
He is frequently asked by other lawyers-both here and in other states- to assist in handling large, challenging and complex claims. Likewise, Gary routinely serves as local counsel for out-of-state plaintiffs’ firms who need experienced North Carolina counsel to bring lawsuits in our state and federal courts.
In recent years, Gary has collaborated with the Rabon Law Firm in exploring and initiating qui tam cases. The synergy of the Rabon Law Firm’s proficiency in the False Claims Act practice area and Gary’s substantial experience in handling complex cases led to his joining forces with the firm as Of Counsel.
