Stefanie began working on expunging criminal records in 2003, as a first year law student clerking for attorney Jon Geffen at Southern Minnesota Regional Legal Services, the legal aid office in St. Paul, Minnesota. Stefanie assisted Jon in pursuing expungement of criminal records for numerous clients. In 2005, Stefanie partnered with Jon to author an important law review article about criminal expungements. Since its publication, this article has been cited by the Minnesota Supreme Court twice. See 31 Wm. Mitchell L. Rev. 1331 (2005); State v. R.H.B., 821 N.W.2d 824 (Minn. 2012); State v. M.D.T., 831 N.W.2d 276, 298 (Minn. 2013) (Anderson, J., dissenting). (Download the article here: http://open.wmitchell.edu/wmlr/vol31/iss4/1/).
Stefanie has been licensed to practice law since 2005, after graduating cum laude from William Mitchell College of Law in St. Paul, Minnesota. In addition to her work during law school, Stefanie was a law review staff member, a semi-finalist in the law school’s moot court competition, and a member of the school’s regional moot court team. After graduating from law school, Stefanie was invited to clerk for an experienced, respected Judge in Hennepin County District Court. Here, Stefanie assisted the Judge with family, civil and criminal matters, including expungement petitions. Stefanie researched and drafted opinions for the Judge in varied contentious and complex matters. Stefanie’s experience working in the judicial system gives her valuable insight into what happens behind the scenes when your Petition for Expungement is brought before the Court.
Stefanie is now an associate attorney at Arneson & Geffen, PLLC. Stefanie is thrilled and honored to be part of this dynamic, client-focused law firm. Stefanie is continually inspired by the firm’s expungement clients and believes in everyone’s ability to change the course of their lives. A criminal record can result from any number of causes, including a previous drug addiction, immaturity, silly college stunts, or an abusive relationship. Stefanie finds great satisfaction in partnering with her clients to tell each person’s story and to explain why the criminal record is not an accurate reflection of the person’s true self. Outside of the office, Stefanie and her husband, Josh, spend their time chasing after their three children at their home in Maple Grove.
If you have a criminal record that is preventing you from obtaining employment or housing and the record is not an accurate reflection of who you really are, Stefanie wants to hear from you. With the changes to the expungement law beginning January 1, 2015, Courts are now able to provide comprehensive relief to deserving individuals. Now is the time to learn if Arneson & Geffen, PLLC can help you seek expungement of your criminal records.
