Michael McLaughlin graduated from Villanova University School of Law in 1987, after receiving a Bachelor of Arts degree in English from Bucknell University in 1984. Mr. McLaughlin is admitted to practice in the Courts of the State of New Jersey, the Courts of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, the United States District Court for the District of New Jersey, the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania the Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit and the Supreme Court of the United States of America.

Mr. McLaughlin began his career with a small family firm headed by his father located in Millburn, New Jersey. Michael practiced here for seven years. He then worked with two mid-sized firms in central New Jersey before joining and becoming a member of a seven attorney bankruptcy boutique firm, Wasserman, Jurista & Stolz in June, 2000 where he remained until March 2012 when he founded his current firm Law Offices of Michael McLaughlin, LLC at 72 West End Ave, Somerville, NJ. Mr. McLaughlin is a member of the New Jersey State Bar Association, Somerset County Bar Association, American Bankruptcy Institute ("ABI") and the Commercial Law League of America ("CLLA"). From 1990 to 1992, Mr. McLaughlin served on the Young Members Section Executive Council of the CLLA. Mr. McLaughlin served as a Master in the New Jersey Bankruptcy Inns of Court from 1998 through 2001.

In 1999, Mr. McLaughlin became a trustee of the Somerset County Bar Association and served as the first chair of its Bankruptcy Law Committee. In June 2001, Mr. McLaughlin was selected for his first two-year term as treasurer of the Somerset County Bar Association. After holding all officer positions in the organization, He served as President of the Somerset County Bar Association from June of 2006 through May of 2007. In June of 2009, he was elected to become a Trustee of the New Jersey State Bar Association as the representative for Somerset County and continues to serve in that capacity.

Mr. McLaughlin has been actively involved in civic activities. He served as a Bernards Township District 15 Committeeman from 1994 to 2000. Mr. McLaughlin was a member of the Bernards Township Board of Adjustment, from 1996 through 1998. He has also coached wrestling and lacrosse in the Basking Ridge youth recreation programs for 8 years. From 2003 through 2007 he was the head coach of the Basking Ridge Wrestling Club.

Mr. McLaughlin has lectured for the New Jersey Institute of Continuing Legal Education (ICLE) on bankruptcy law and related issues on numerous occasions. At the 1997 Bankruptcy Bench Bar conference, Mr. McLaughlin was a panelist at the breakout session entitled "Good Faith and Substantial Abuse in Chapter 7 and 13." At the 2002 Bench Bar conference, he was a panelist on the topic "Sale of Assets/Successor Liability." In 2006 he spoke on a panel addressing Electronic Discovery issues. Mr McLaughlin was one of three attorneys who summarized and lectured on all recent bankruptcy cases decided in New Jersey during 2008 through 2009. In the Commercial Law League, Mr. McLaughlin spoke in a March 1995 panel in a seminar entitled "Bankruptcy and Matrimonial Law When Courts Collide." In the New Jersey State Bar Association Bankruptcy Law Section Newsletter, Mr. McLaughlin published an article entitled "Cohen v. Day La Cruz, U.S. Supreme Court Holds Treble Damage Claim Awarded Under The New Jersey Consumer Fraud Act Nondischargeable."

In the fall of 2002, he authored another article in the Bankruptcy Law Section Newsletter entitled "Official Committee of Unsecured Creditors v. R.F. Lafferty & Company, Inc., 3rd. Circuit Court of Appeals Holds Creditors’ Committee Has Standing to Pursue ‘Deepening Insolvency’ Claim on Behalf of Debtor Corporations, But Dismisses Case on Account of Equitable Defense of In Pari Delicto".

Mr. McLaughlin is a former member of the private panel of Chapter 7 trustees, having served as Chapter 7 trustee from 1988 through 1993. He continues to represent trustees in the administration of their cases. He has also served in state court liquidation proceedings known as Assignments for the Benefit of Creditors as the assignee in the case charged with the responsibility to administer the sale of any assets.

Mr. McLaughlin has represented debtors, creditors, commercial landlords, trustees and secured creditors in varied Chapter 11, 13 and 7 cases in New Jersey. Mr. McLaughlin has also handled complex commercial litigation. One significant case was an action to set aside a fraudulent transfer of assets under the New Jersey Fraudulent Transfer Act. During trial, a large settlement recovery was obtained for a client. Mr. McLaughlin has been successful in collection of several substantial judgments over the course of his career. Mr. McLaughlin has represented secured lenders in complex Chapter 11 proceedings.
