Michelle M. Montgomery, a 1995 cum laude graduate of the University of Illinois College of Law, currently focuses her law practice in the area of commercial real estate. She maintains a thriving real-estate practice with clients such as Bankers Life and Casualty Company and Sears Holding Company. The success she enjoys today has roots in career and life experiences that have included financial transactions, marketing and trading securities, and consulting and training banking professionals.
Her law career started at the law firm of Dickinson, Wright, Moon, Van Dusen & Freeman. Later, she transitioned to Schwartz, Cooper Greenberger & Krauss. During these years she represented institutions such as Kmart in shopping center development, outlet dispositions, and ground and retail leasing; LaSalle Bank, N.A. and Fifth Third Bank in real estate and construction financing, and REIT Equity Residential, focusing on dispositions and acquisitions of multi-family real estate holdings.
Michelle’s successful track record with commercial real estate negotiations and transactions landed her an opportunity to serve as special counsel at the firm of Wildman, Harrold, Allen, & Dixon, where she led the due-diligence team for the purchase by the Australian REIT, JF US Trust, of 75 industrial properties valued at over $500 million dollars. Ultimately, in 2007, she chose to join her father (noted attorney James D. Montgomery), at the venerable law firm of James D. Montgomery & Associates, Ltd., to grow her own real estate practice.
Ms. Montgomery received her undergraduate degree in Business Administration from the University of Michigan, and is a proud alumnus of the University of Chicago Laboratory H.S. as well. Her formative education spawned opportunities for her to spend several years on Wall Street at Drexel Burnham Lambert where she sowed the seeds of her real estate knowledge and practice, evaluating and marketing mortgage backed securities. Her success in that arena led to opportunities to travel and work in Europe training bankers in the area of balance sheet management.
As a firm believer in giving back to her profession and her community, Michelle actively supports a number of professional and community-based organizations. For eleven years she has served as a hearing officer for the Attorney Registration and Disciplinary Commission. With great joy and passion, she serves on the boards of The Women’s Treatment Center and the Cook County Juvenile Detention Center Foundation.
