Thomas E. "Tommy" Pope is a managing partner with Elrod Pope Law Firm, based in Rock Hill, South Carolina. Mr. Pope focuses on personal injury and medical malpractice cases, and he is most often recognized for his prosecution of Susan Smith, who was accused of drowning her two children. This 1995 case in Union County, South Carolina, made national headlines. He frequently brings his 30-plus years of prosecution and law enforcement experience to national and international media outlets as a commentator on cases involving parents who are accused of crimes similar to Smith’s.

Mr. Pope received a bachelor’s degree from the University of South Carolina School of Business in 1984 and obtained his Juris Doctor from the University of South Carolina in 1987, and he was an honors graduate from the South Carolina Criminal Justice Academy. He subsequently served as solicitor for the 16th Circuit in Union and York counties from 1993 to 2006. During this time, the 16th Circuit led the state in caseload management by conducting timely and effective prosecution of criminal cases.

Mr. Pope is a member of the South Carolina Bar Association and the York County Bar Association. He is admitted to the U.S. Supreme Court and the Federal District Court. He is a member of the South Carolina House of Representatives for the 47th District. He was elected South Carolina House Speaker Pro Tempore in 2014. Prior to being elected he served on the House Republican Caucus Tax Study Committee, House Republican Ethics Reform Study Committee, Medical, Military, Public and Municipal Affairs Committee, Ethics Committee, and Judiciary Committee. Mr. Pope is a House Republican Floor Leader for the House Republican Floor Community Involvement. He was selected to the 2013 and 2014 South Carolina Super Lawyer List. This is an extraordinary honor awarded to less than five percent of South Carolina lawyers. Mr. Pope was also an honoree for the South Carolina Lawyers Weekly’s Leadership in Law Award in March of 2014.

The University of South Carolina Law School Alumni Association awarded Mr. Pope the Silver Compleat Lawyer Award in 1999 for his competence, integrity, ethics and superior performance in his profession. In 2008, he received South Carolina’s highest civilian honor, the Order of the Palmetto, for his dedication and service to fellow residents. He was recognized by the South Carolina Chamber of Commerce as a recipient of the Business Advocate Award in 2011 and by the American Legion of South Carolina as the 2012 Legislator of the Year.

South Carolina Chief Justice Jean Toal has called on Mr. Pope to serve on various committees concerning the administration of justice. He served as the chairman of the South Carolina Common Prosecution Coordination in 2006, and he is a member of the South Carolina Association for Justice. Actively involved in his community, he served as the chief volunteer officer of the Boys and Girls Club of York County in 2009, and he is a member of the York County At-Risk Youth Task Force. He serves on the York Technical College Criminal Justice Advisory Committee and he is an Ambassador to City of Rock Hill’s community program: #1 Question: Is it Good for the Children?.
