Michael Quirke joined Wright & Greenhill, P.C. in March 2018. Born and raised in Houston, Michael studied history and art at Texas Christian University for his undergraduate education. He attended TCU on an Army ROTC scholarship and initially expected to serve in a peacetime army after college. Fate, however, had different plans, as the unfortunate events of September 11, 2001 happened his freshman year and the subsequent invasion of Iraq during his junior year. Preferring a role "outside the wire," Michael chose to serve in the infantry, and following his graduation from TCU, he passed the Infantry Officer Basic Course and Ranger school and soon found himself serving as a platoon leader in Fort Riley, KS, and not long thereafter, on the streets of southwest Rasheed, Baghdad. During the waning months of a 15-month deployment in Iraq, which spanned almost the entirety of the so-called "Surge" led by General David Petraeus, Michael was promoted from platoon leader to executive officer, the second-in-command of a company. Shortly after returning to the states, he was selected to serve as the aide-de-camp to the acting Commanding General of the First Infantry Division ("The Big Red One") and Fort Riley. He served in this role for the last year of his obligated military service and then, concluding that the Army officer corps was in good hands, left the Army with an honorable discharge at the rank of Captain. As a newly minted civilian, Michael moved straight to Austin, where we worked odd tech jobs, began the law school application process, and started a journalistic online nonprofit that would later gain the leadership and participation of the Texas state climatologist and other renowned climate scientists. Michael was then accepted into the part-time program at the University of Houston Law Center, where he initially attended classes by night and ran his nonprofit by day. Michael then transitioned into the full-time program, taking every opportunity he could to develop his trial advocacy skills with mock trial competitions and worthwhile internships and clerkships during his summers. While at UHLC, he volunteered as an officer in the Energy & Environmental Law Society and Federalist Society (a rare combination), interned at the Harris County District Attorney’s Office, and clerked at the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality and Texas Attorney General’s Office. Following his graduation from UHLC, Michael wrapped up his nonprofit work, passed the bar, and began practicing in August 2016 at a plaintiff’s personal injury law firm in Houston. God then smiled upon Michael and gave him an opportunity to work with the great lawyers at Wright and Greenhill, P.C. in Austin, the jewel of Texas. Michael readily jumped at the opportunity and he has been practicing here ever since.
