Roberta graduated summa cum laude from the State University of New York at Albany in 1978 with a B.A. in Political Science and Sociology. She received her J.D. from the University of Michigan Law School, cum laude, in 1981, where she also served as a Research and Development Editor for the University of Michigan Journal of Law Reform.

Roberta then practiced law in San Diego for more than a decade, focusing on general civil litigation with particular emphasis on general business litigation and commercial landlord-tenant matters. She later turned her attention to teaching and taught legal writing from 1997 through 2008. She has taught at the University of San Diego School of Law, California Western School of Law, and Concord Law School. She joined Kirby & McGuinn in 2010 when she returned to private practice.
