Tyler Wilkinson is a trial lawyer whose roots run deep in Wisconsin farm country. He grew up on a farm in the small southwest Wisconsin community of Muscoda. Mr. Wilkinson is the son and grandson of auctioneers. He spent his weekends helping with the family business, Wilkinson Auction & Realty Co., which has run auctions in Wisconsin for more than 50 years.

Mr. Wilkinson believes working at auctions was great preparation for practicing law, because both areas require two things: the skills to get the very best result for the client, and the compassion to help that client through a difficult and emotional experience.

Before Mr. Wilkinson became a lawyer, he was a teacher – another experience that shaped how he practices law. While at UW-Madison, he was recruited by Teach for America, a non-profit organization that selects the best and brightest college graduates to teach in low-income public schools across the nation.

He went through six weeks’ training in New York City and was then put in front of a class of fifth graders with special needs in Brooklyn. His first hurdle was language: the children spoke Spanish; he did not. But he says that he learned – not just the language but the value of patience, of careful listening, and of seeing a problem from the other side. These skills, he says, also translate well into the practice of law, where it’s critically important to find common ground to resolve cases, when possible, without litigation.

When his two-year teaching commitment was finished, Mr. Wilkinson was asked to train other future teachers for Teach for America. He also accepted an opportunity to travel the nation leading workshops on critical thinking, problem solving and management for the national fraternity of Alpha Gamma Rho. He still seeks out public speaking opportunities whenever possible.

In his free time, Mr. Wilkinson loves to cook – although he confesses that baking is not his strong suit. He also hunts, fishes, runs and spends as much time as possible boating on Lake Mendota and hiking at Devil’s Lake.

He says he loves the outdoors in part because growing up on a farm taught him to appreciate nature and all the changes that come with each Wisconsin season.

Admitted to practice in the state courts of Wisconsin and the United States District Courts for the Eastern and Western Districts of Wisconsin.
