William T. (Bill) Wilson came to Covington, Virginia from Crewe, Virginia in 1963. He received a BA degree from Hampden Sydney College in 1960 and a Juris Doctor degree from the University of Virginia in 1963. He joined the late Senator Hale Collins at that time and they engaged in the general practice of law until Senator Collins died in 1971. In 1973, Mr. Wilson was elected to the Virginia House of Delegates where he served until 1989. During that time, he served on various committees and commissions, including Corporations, Insurance and Banking, General Laws, Privileges and Elections, Labor and Commerce, the Joint Legislative Audit and Review Commission (JLARC); the Coal Mine Health and Safety Commission, and many other committees and sub-committees.
Mr. Wilson is a member of the American Trial Lawyers Association (ATLA), the Virginia Trial Lawyers Association (VTLA), the Boyd Graves Conference, the Chief Justice’s Studies regarding the Courts in the 21st Century, and Involuntary Commitment. He has also been active with the Virginia State Bar, serving on the Virginia State Bar Council (twice); the Judicial Nominations Committee as Chair, the Computer Study Committee as Chair, the CLBA Executive Committee; the Professionalism Committee (also served on the faculty), and the Senior Lawyers Conference (SLC) Board of Governors as a member and Chair. He is the former substitute judge of the Alleghany County court in Covington, Virginia.
Mr. Wilson is also a member of the American Board of Trial Advocates (ABOTA) and has served as past Chair of the Virginia Chapter of that organization. While at Hampden Sydney College, he was named to the Mason-Dixon first team (football) and received the Slater Trophy for the Most Improved Player. He also received the Gammon Cup for Character, Athletics and Scholarship and the Patrick Henry Award for Public Service. Mr. Wilson has served as Past President of the Alleghany-Bath-Highland Bar Association. Mr. Wilson has been named a “Super Lawyer” by the Richmond, Virginia “Richmond Magazine” annually since 2006. He also received the Medallion of Merit from the Dabney S. Lancaster Community College.
In his community, Mr. Wilson has served on many boards and foundations including the Alleghany Chapter of the Izaak Walton League, the Covington-Hot Springs Rotary Club (past president), Dabney S. Lancaster Community College Foundation Board (past chairman and now chairman elect) and the Red Cross Board of Directors (past chairman) to name a few.
Mr. Wilson is married to the former Langhorne Clarke formerly of Salem, Virginia and they have one daughter, Taylor, a 2009 graduate of Virginia Tech with a degree in Psychology. Taylor now lives in Roanoke, Virginia and is employed by the Social Security Administration.
