Areas of Practice Whistleblower Protection, Antidepressant Birth Defects

R. Brent Wisner is an associate in the Los Angeles office of Baum, Hedlund, Aristei & Goldman, PC. He concentrates his practice on consumer class actions, whistleblower and qui tam claims, and pharmaceutical-related personal injury. Brent is also one of the firm’s primary brief writers, having drafted and argued motions in federal and appellate courts around the United States. Brent’s career is marked by two driving forces – a deep-rooted passion to help those who have been marginalized and hurt by large corporations, and a tireless effort to expand his mastery of the law for his clients.

Prior to working at Baum Hedlund, Brent served as a Law Clerk for the Honorable Helen Gillmor in the U.S. District Court for the District of Hawaii for two years. There he worked on several jury trials, both criminal and civil, and was responsible for aiding the Court in resolving complex motions. He also gained valuable experience when Judge Gillmor sat by designation on the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit and United States District Court for the District of Arizona.

Brent received his law degree (J.D.) and a Master of Public Policy (M.P.P.) from Georgetown University. At Georgetown, Brent was a Managing Director of the Trial Advocacy Program, where he coached and trained fellow students, and participated in numerous trial advocacy competitions around the country. Brent led his teams to numerous victories, including winning the National Student Ethics Competition in 2008 and advancing to the final round at the National Student Trial Advocacy Competition, hosted by the American Association of Justice, in 2009. Personally, Brent received numerous awards, including “Top Advocate” and “Best Attorney” at various tournaments. In addition to his work with the Trial Advocacy Program, Brent also served as the Executive Editor of the Georgetown Public Policy Review – a peer-reviewed publication focusing on important issues in law and public policy. Since Brent’s Master of Public Policy degree focused on applied statistics and the creation of public policy, his work on the Georgetown Public Policy Review allowed Brent to bridge his passion for law with its application to society. This led, in part, to Brent’s thesis project, “The Politics of Enforcement: How the Department of Justice Enforces the False Claims Act” which was selected for publication in 2012.

Brent’s time at Georgetown, however, was primarily occupied with his volunteer work. At Georgetown Law, Brent volunteered at the Institute on Religion and Public Policy, where he drafted testimony, affidavits, and declarations for legal proceedings that related to human rights. He also drafted a congressional resolution related to the violation of human rights in Bangladesh and lobbied its passing. Because of his work helping to fight for human rights, Brent was awarded a Public Service Award from Georgetown Law for completing over 750 hours of pro bono legal work.

Prior to law and graduate school, Brent participated in the prestigious Coro Public Policy Fellowship, where Brent conducted several high-profile consulting projects for non-profit organizations, labor unions, local and national governments, and various political candidates. It was a formative experience for Brent where he developed a unique insight into how, through the law, one could genuinely improve society.

Brent received his undergraduate degree from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), where Brent studied Philosophy, Political Science, and Public Policy. At UCLA, Brent was heavily involved with the UCLA Sailing team, serving as a Captain for two years. In addition, Brent was a Captain on the UCLA Mock Trial Team when the team won back-to-back National Championships in 2004 and 2005. Brent was individually recognized as an “All-American Attorney” by the American Mock Trial Association.
